MEPC Annual Recap | 2021

 

2021 marked a transformational year at MEPC, as we advanced the successes of our existing programs while developing new, innovative avenues of engagement with Washington and beyond. We are excited to share our 2021 annual highlights and we look forward to continuing to serve as a meaningful voice in the international policy community. 

 

1) 40 Under 40

In 2021, MEPC launched our first ever 40 Under 40 program. Through our #MEPC40Under40 hashtag, 58 tweets were created and shared with over 560k users. Princeton University’s School of International and Public Affairs, George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs, and State Department’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs and Bureau of Energy Resources created tweets highlighting MEPC’s awardees from their institutions.

 

2) Media Appearances

International platforms, such as Sky News Arabia, Al-Ghad Al-Araby TV, and Asharq TV, as well as domestic platforms, including The Wall Street Journal, MSNBC, and CNN, have featured MEPC’s unparalleled expertise. MEPC leadership is prolific in news media and has been featured in over 150 interviews and articles in 2021 alone, reaching millions of people around the world.

3) Middle East Policy Journal Recognition

According to Google Scholar, MEPC’s world renowned quarterly journal, Middle East Policy, is the #1 most cited publication on the region in the world. This year, the Observatory recognized Middle East Policy as being a top 10 journal followed on Twitter.

 

4) Contributor Dialogues

In 2021, MEPC launched our Journal Contributor Dialogue series, featuring a live discussion between MEPC Executive Director Bassima Alghuessein and Middle East Policy contributors, as well as other regional authors. CSPAN, recognizing the quality and relevancy of this series, has broadcast it on their platform.

5) Policy Products and Programing

In addition to hosting our 103rd, 104th, 105th, and 106th Capitol Hill Conferences, MEPC bolstered its congressional engagement through the creation of a Congressional Policy Briefs program. Our products, “Fast Facts on Hot Topics” and “10 Cents: A Dime Sized Fact Sheet on Complex Issues,” provide policymakers with tailored resources to better understand rapidly evolving geopolitical events, allowing for enhanced decision-making capabilities.

 

6) Power Lunch

In 2021, MEPC launched its first ever Power Lunch, featuring Mohammed Oun, Libyan Minister of Oil and Gas. The event discussed the reconstruction of the petroleum sector and the resulting market and policy implications.

 

7) Straight from the Source

Rebranded to better highlight its unique regional perspective, Middle East in Focus transitioned to Straight from the Source this year. Straight from the Source provides a timely synopsis of commentary and news from Middle Eastern media outlets to shed light on breaking developments and opinions that are underrepresented in U.S. mainstream media.

8) TeachMideast Content Development

Our unique web resource TeachMideast emboldens future leaders by providing a variety of educational materials, keeping students and teachers up to date on the region’s most pressing developments. To augment dated textbooks, MEPC updated TeachMideast‘s web content to reflect quickly evolving geo-political changes within the region.

 

9) TeachMideast Instagram

In 2021, MEPC significantly enhanced the TeachMideast Instagram content to now include essential information on historical events and milestones, as well as breaking news in the region. Since June, our team has created over 50 personalized and educational TME graphics.

10) Emerging Voices

This year, MEPC launched our Emerging Voices series, highlighting scholarship from rising academics focused on Middle Eastern studies. This series developed a variety of thematic content, such as climate and energypublic health, and cybersecurity
