A Rapid Advance

  • On Friday, November 29, a coalition led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and Turkish-backed forces, specifically the Syrian National Army, initiated a large-scale offensive that captured the city of Aleppo, bringing the city under rebel control for the first time since 2016.
  • Insurgent forces successfully reclaimed over 50 towns and villages in the northwest of the country, advancing towards critical government positions.
    • This offensive represents the most significant push by opposition forces since 2020, indicating a pivotal shift in insurgent tactics that prioritize rapid territorial acquisition and urban warfare strategies
    • Reports indicate that more than 250 combatants have lost their lives amid the ongoing intense clashes.
  • In response, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces, supported by Iranian-backed militias and Russian aerial bombardment, have begun counteroffensives to recover lost territory.
    • Reinforcements have been dispatched to Aleppo, underscoring the city’s strategic importance.
  • Government sources believe that the next several days are critical, as additional Syrian military units are converging on the contested regions, particularly around the outskirts of Aleppo.

Humanitarian Crisis Escalates

  • According to UN reports, over 50,000 civilians have been displaced in just a few days, with children making up half of that number.
    • Humanitarian organizations are becoming overwhelmed and are facing severe shortages of medical supplies and shelter.
  • Civilian casualties are rising, with at least 27 people reported dead, and hospitals are struggling to treat victims, many of whom have shrapnel wounds. Additionally, some areas remain inaccessible to aid workers due to ongoing hostilities.
  • The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has expressed grave concerns about the worsening situation and is urging all parties involved to ensure the protection of civilians.
  • The 13-year conflict has killed over 600,000 civilians and displaced about 13 million, including forcing millions more to seek refuge in neighboring countries and further abroad in Europe.
