November 2021

November was a compelling month at the Middle East Policy Council, as we launched our 40 Under 40 Awards, while continuing to be a powerful, relevant voice in the international policy community. We expanded your access to breaking news and analysis directly from the Middle East via Straight from the Source and developed new online content for you in our eight focus areas.

40 Under 40 Inaugural Launch

On November 4, MEPC launched our first ever 40 Under 40 Awards. This exciting new program engages young leaders who influence U.S.-MENA relations across all sectors including academia, business, culture, and diplomacy.

Through our #MEPC40Under40 hashtag, 58 tweets were created and shared with over 560k users. Princeton University’s School of International and Public Affairs, George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs, and State Department’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs and Bureau of Energy Resources created tweets highlighting MEPC’s awardees from their institutions.

Media Appearances

MEPC leadership continues to be a prolific and influential voice throughout the U.S. and MENA with appearances in The Wall Street Journal, MSNBC, CNN, Asharq TV, Sky News, Arabia, Al-Ghad Al-Araby TV, and more. For a full list, click here.

This November, MEPC leadership specifically collaborated with Asharq TV and Sky News Arabia to highlight crucial developments in Iranian foreign policy and the return to JCPOA talks in Vienna.

Omani National Day

On November 18, MEPC President Richard Schmierer spoke at the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center’s Omani National Day event, hosted by Omani Ambassador Moosa Al Tai. Schmierer’s remarks highlighted Oman’s essential role in facilitating the U.S. engagement with Iran which led to the Iran nuclear deal, as well as Oman’s continuing efforts to help end the Yemen conflict.

Congressional Policy Briefs

MEPC fostered congressional engagement through our Policy Briefs program, providing policymakers with tailored resources to better understand rapidly evolving geopolitical events and thus, enhancing decision-making capabilities.

November’s briefs analyzed unfolding current events, including the military coup in Sudan and the diplomatic flare up in the Gulf.
